Default Solutions to the war in Afghanistan, What would you do?

As everybody knows there is a war in Afghanistan, one that I can only assume is being slowly lost if there are increasing call for further troops and equipment to be sent to the country.

Puts yourself in the boots of the head of your respective country's military forces, what would you do to end to conflict? Would you pull all your forces out and let the country sort out their own problems? Would you send in more troops? Would you just "nuke" it? Or would you just say screw it I'm off to the pub? Post your tactics/ battle plan for this notoriously difficult to control country and lets see where this runs.

we can't win in Afghanistan in terms of military might. they have never been conquered by anyone since like the 1700's. the Russians couldn't do it. what makes us think that we can? the only way to have a "success" is to win over the people and set up a form of government that they approve of. not necessarily a democracy. we will never destroy groups like the Taliban or Al-Qaeda by military force. we need the middle eastern people themselves to turn against these terrorist cells. once they lack the support of the masses they will lose steam and allow us to take control, stabilize, and leave.

Idiotic responses aside (*coughJaxmoncough*), what Frankenfish said is basically right. As it is, what we basically should try to do is set up a regime in which the gorups, perhaps not fully get along, but have no US intervention. As it is, US and the other nation's forces are considered one of the reasons that the Al Queda and the Taliban have become a force to reckon with as more and more people turn to them to fight against the 'American devils' or whatever they're called. Cut that off, where people don't feel they need to, and the situation will move from there.

Screw it, I'm off to the pub. Why should I care about it? I don't care.

Nah, just kidding. :P

I must say pull all of the forces. I don't really know if this is a hoax or not but, there was a news that said the US military shoot some people who in their assumption, it's Al-Qaeda force. But actually, it was some groups that, ironically, want to say to Afghanistan people if US isn't evil.

So, I must say using military is bad way. We should think other methods than using force.

Exactly.

The biggest problem, and one that people are going to bring up again and again is that now that the US military forces HAVE set up base in Afghanistan, if they were to pull themselves out anytime soon, the region would basically collapse to chaos IMHO as the insurgents take over the area left.

Helping a regime set up, somewhat like the one in Iraq (though without the whole military overtone) is a nice gesture, but then you have the idea of a whole "puppet" regime.

Perhaps we'll never know. Heavens knows that the Senate and the House don't agree on anything.

This is not an easy task. An Afghan who is your enemy today may be your ally tomorrow.

The Afghan people change sides like most people change underwear. Although they do flip-flop quite easily, they still fight with passion for whatever side they believe is right.

One thing that must be done is to remove the taliban's cash crop of opium based products. That's where they get a large chunk of their weapon money.
